STEWARD IS THE RANK WHERE TRAINING STOPS BEING A CLASS YOU TAKE AND BECOMES SOMETHING YOU HOLD UP.
RANK 6 OF 7
3 sessions · scenario assessment · legal exam ≥90% · 200 rounds across three drills · one event assisted
“TRAINING IS PART OF WHO I AM, NOT A TASK”
Who this is for
The serious student — the one who has taken everything you offer and is starting to be the person others ask. Steward is the first rank scored on judgment rather than marksmanship, and the first that asks you to give something back to the room.
What changes
You stop being graded only on where the rounds go and start being graded on what you decided.
YOUR JUDGMENT
Scenario work scored on decisions, not just hits. Knowing when not to shoot is part of the grade, and it can fail you.
YOUR LAW
A legal module exam at 90% or better, because the consequences of a defensive act are legal before they are tactical.
YOUR BENCH
You assist at one YRT event. The people behind you on the Path start to become your responsibility — which is the point of the rank.
Before & after
Same person. Three sessions apart.
BEFORE
X You shoot well and cannot fully explain why
X You have never once been graded on a decision
X You know the law the way most carriers know it: approximately
X You take classes. You do not yet hold anything up.
AFTER

✓ Legal module exam passed at 90% or better
✓ A scenario assessment scored by two instructors, on judgment
✓ One YRT event assisted, on the record, with your name against it

The standard – published in full
Every rank is earned against a published standard, scored by an instructor and signed. This is Rank 6’s, in full.
| Assessment | What you must do | Pass threshold |
|---|---|---|
| Scenario-based assessment | Force-on-target scenarios, judged on the decision made and the words used | Scored by two instructors. A poor decision fails the assessment regardless of where the rounds went |
| Legal module exam | The legal module, examined closed-book | ≥90% |
| 200 rounds, three graded drills | 200 rounds fired across three separately graded drills | 160 of 200 inside the 8-ring |
| Event assist | One YRT event assisted, working alongside an instructor | Attendance and sign-off by the lead instructor |
| NRA MQP benchmark | The NRA course of fire completed; the award itself is applied for separately by the student | Distinguished Expert course of fire — “Working toward the NRA Distinguished Expert qualification.” |
Any safety violation fails the rank outright. So does a failed judgment call in the scenario assessment – that is a scoring element not a discussion.
Note the NRA language on this rank carefully, and keep it exact: the course of fire is completed, the award is applied for separately. The manual is explicit that YRT never writes “NRA certified” or “NRA program” anywhere on a page.
The award
Awards are presented formally, at a graduation – not handed over in a parking lot. That is what makes them worth earning.
- Embroidered patch – the Rank 6 insignia
- Rocker arc – “Steward”
- Pin
- Certificate
- Yellow Rose Tactical Coin
- Presentation Box
Yellow Rose Tactical awards are Yellow Rose Tactical issued. Nothing in this kit is an NRA award, and no part of it implies an official NRA program. NRA Marksmanship Qualification awards are purchased separately by the student from the NRA Program Materials Center.
Prerequisites & bypass
PREREQUISITE
RANK 5 – HOME DEFENDER
Steward assumes the performance work is already done. Every rank below it graded what you can do; this one grades what you decide, which is only worth measuring once the mechanics are reliable.
BYPASS – FOR EXPERIENCED SHOOTERS
Private Skills Check – $149
(90 minutes)
You do not have to start at Rank 1 to enter the Path. The Skills Check places you at the rank you have already earned, so an operator is never sent back to First Steps.
JUDGMENT IS THE LAST THING YOU CAN BE TAUGHT. COME AND BE MEASURED ON IT.
